Once Upon a Watershed is a project of Oak Grove School in partnership with the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and the Ojai and Ventura Unified School Districts. The program seeks to awaken wonder, appreciation, discovery, and connection with the natural, world and to cultivate a sense of shared responsibility for our whole earth system, instilling confidence and hope by empowering young people to make a real difference at the local watershed scale.
The program provides hands-on watershed education, restoration, and stewardship experience to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at Oak Grove School as well as public schools throughout the Ventura River Watershed, including students in both the Ojai (upper watershed) and Ventura (lower watershed) communities. It is correlated with the Science Content Standards for all three grades and has three phases: (1) an in-class assembly presentation and slideshow to set the stage and provide context for the field experience, (2) a hands-on restoration and/or stewardship experience in the field, and (3) a reflective in-class follow-up activity. Over the long term, this program is designed to provide all three components of the program to every student passing through Oak Grove School and the local public school system.
This project is made possible by support from Oak Grove School and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's B-WET grant program. Thank you!
