The Least of These
During college, I was on a study program located in what was then Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), in the Soviet Union. While there, we visited an orphanage for infants and toddlers. It was close to lunchtime, and there were about 25 children at that location. All were awake for our visit. Some of the little ones were playing on the floor, some in cribs, and one in the arms of our tour guide/caregiver. Having been around children all my life, I was stunned by how quiet it was. The facility felt empty. Not one of the children was fussing, whining, or crying. It was explained that babies learn not to cry when no one responds to their tears.
I often wonder if the pervasive silence around poverty, violence, oppression, and exploitation is similar to hearing babies cry when we are not able to respond to them. We may hear the urgency, but the help offered would never be enough to meet seemingly insurmountable needs ...

Ojai Youth Entertainers Studio was chosen as the charity of choice for this year's Day of Reading fundraiser. Day of Reading is Oak Grove’s annual student-led fundraiser that combines a love for books with a commitment to giving back. The 2025 event kicks off next week, on Tuesday, February 4, with a launch parade and school-wide celebration. It wraps up 10 days later, on Friday, February 14, with an all-school assembly. On the final day, students come to school in their pajamas, carrying a favorite stuffy and book to spend the day immersed in reading and storytelling.

Celebrating
Martin Luther King, Jr.
This year, Oak Grove’s Martin Luther King, Jr. all-school assembly provided a thoughtful moment for our community to reflect on the values Dr. King championed: unity, progress, and shared responsibility.

High School
Mini Projects
Each year, while the senior class embarks on their trip to visit our sister schools in India, Oak Grove’s remaining high school students dive into an immersive week-long period known as “Mini Projects.” This program allows students and teachers to explore unique crafts, skills, or concepts through hands-on learning and collaborative experiments.
Designed to foster curiosity and creativity, Mini Projects offer faculty members the chance to share personal interests and expertise while connecting with students across High School grade levels.
