Solving problems is how children build competence – both in the classroom and in life. The aim of a healthy life is not to eliminate hardship but to develop the skills and inner resources to meet it. Each challenge becomes an opportunity to refine our problem-solving abilities and strengthen our coping mechanisms, so that when difficulties arise, we can continue forward without being paralyzed by struggle. By normalizing everyday problems, we help children see that challenges are not detours from life’s path – they are the very ground upon which the path is forged.

Recently, my two-year-old granddaughter and I were getting ready to go outside to play. When I bent down to help her with her shoes, she snapped, “I do it!” So I stepped back and watched as she wrestled with them. Every attempt I made to guide her was met with fierce resistance. After what felt like an eternity, she stood up beaming with pride – her purple Crocs perfectly on the wrong feet. And off we went outside.

High School Trip to Japan

This summer, a group of Oak Grove High School students embarked on a journey to Japan to attend the 2025 World Expo in Osaka. The trip was made possible through the generosity of a donor who had been deeply moved by attending a World’s Fair in his own youth. By supporting this experience, he hoped to offer our students the same life-changing opportunity: to witness the breadth of the world and the transformative power of innovation.

When Maia Friedman transferred to Oak Grove School in the middle of 10th grade, she was searching for something more than just a new school – she was looking for a place where she could belong. After a challenging semester at a very large public high school in Santa Barbara, Oak Grove offered a dramatic shift: a smaller, creative, and deeply supportive environment where individuality was not only accepted, but celebrated.

K Quote

"In society, in the family, in a school, if there is no order there is no relationship. And yet we want a relationship which is really an attachment to another without an inward sense of harmony, wholeness, integrity."
