Above: A culminating moment at our 50th birthday celebration – September 15th, 2025
In this shared endeavor, a common thread emerges each year – a theme from the teachings of our intent as a school that invites us to pause and reflect on our deepest purpose. This year, as we mark our 50th, we chose the theme The Art of Living and Learning. Krishnamurti said that true learning begins with direct observation of “what is,” free from judgment or distortion – a clear attention unclouded by fear, comparison, or the pressure to become.
In such observation, clarity itself becomes action. Rooted in relationship with ourselves, others, and nature, this way of seeing is both profoundly simple and, according to our founder, a place without conflict. And yet, if you’ve ever tried to get a preschooler into a car seat… or a teenager out of bed… you know how quickly conflict can arise in our daily lives.

A Big Milestone
Oak Grove's 50th Birthday Party
What began 50 years ago, with just a few children and teachers sitting cross-legged in the grass, has blossomed into a vibrant, thriving community.

A Remembrance by David Moody
The First Day of School, 1975
School began at 8:30 on the upper portion of the back lawn at Arya Vihara, in the east end of the valley. There were eight or ten of us that first day, sitting cross-legged in a circle on the grass. There were three elementary students, two teachers, the director, the chef, and a couple of visitors.

Reflecting on
Peace
What does it mean to “work at peace” – for a child, for a school, for us as adults?
Last week, we joined communities worldwide in recognizing the International Day of Peace. At Oak Grove, we extend this observance into an entire Peace Week, inviting our students and staff to explore the notion of peace in their own lives and in our shared world.

A Teacher's Reflection
Inner Inspirations
Out in the yard, a child stops, gasping, “I saw a bobcat tail!” Movement in the oak grove sparks a flurry of wondering. Kids run to the fence to peer through the clear morning light, speculating. “Here’s my clue – the scratch was that way, so the bobcat is going to the meadow.” “I’m doing what a bobcat would do. So, where would I go? This is definitely a bobcat area!” Teachers bring out binoculars, then set up a center – cat figurines, books, tree cookies, and a prompt, “What do you know about cats?” This moment leads to many others – one encounter shared, magnified, and deepened.
