Rooted in Dignity

Written in the center of the display is the question, “How can I become a voice for kindness and fairness when someone is being treated unfairly?” Around the edges of the poster are handprints, cut-outs from students’ and adults' own hands with words or images responding to the question. One older student writes, “Recognize the humanity in everyone.” Another reads, “By being an upstander and protecting them.” A young “new” writer puts, “I help.”

This is a collaborative art project we have been creating together as a community throughout January. Students, faculty, staff, board members, and parenting adults have been adding their own handprints, each one distinct, each one part of something larger.

Parent Education

Data to Dialogue

As parents and educators, we are deeply concerned about the growing issues surrounding youth mental health and the impact of technology on our children. The goal of this talk, titled “Data to Dialogue: Shining a light on youth mental health and discussing ways to support families and children in our modern tech culture,” was to build awareness about the current mental health crisis in youth and discuss its link to the modern tech culture. As working professionals in pediatrics and the E.R., Dr. Allie Binkowski and Dr. Sara Marnell shared evidence-based data and cautionary stories from the frontlines.

MLK Day

Building a Beloved Community

A book, a poem, singing together, and art projects. This year’s all-school assembly in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. left our hearts full and imagining a more peaceful world. Following the assembly, students and staff divided into our Lizard groups to work on art projects inspired by themes of hope, togetherness, and thoughtfulness.

Day of Reading

Supporting Raptors

Ahead of this year’s Day of Reading, Oak Grove students cast their ballots to choose a local nonprofit to support. Through this student vote, they selected the Ojai Raptor Center, directing 20% of the funds they raise to the organization and its work rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured and orphaned birds of prey.
