A Message from
The Head of School

A moment of silence . . .
When was the last time you took a walk in nature? How about sitting on a boulder and quietly observing a tree? Have you taken the time to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee without scrolling through your phone or mentally reviewing your to-do list?

So many of us are feeling overstimulated, exhausted, and overwhelmed in our personal lives. We might be concerned about the tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. We may feel distraught by the global contraction of human rights and perhaps hold our breaths as we navigate the contentious extremism of the upcoming election year.
Let’s take a moment of silence, a moment to breathe.

The Wholeness of Responsibility
Theme Week
This April, we hosted our inaugural Theme Week at Oak Grove School relating to our theme for the school year, The Wholeness of Responsibility. Coinciding with the annual one-week residency with Benjamin Mertz, who is a human rights and racial justice activist as well as a composer and song leader specializing in music of the Black Spiritual tradition, Theme Week was an opportunity for our whole community to explore the Wholeness of Responsibility in relation to social justice.

7th and 8th Grade
Apprenticeships
How do we push children outside of their familiarity and into an experience where they can explore their interests within the context of a career?
Each year, our middle school students in the 7th and 8th grades complete an apprenticeship, during which they spend a day outside of regular school to enter the “world of work” by shadowing a mentor or team of mentors of their choice.

Outdoor Education
6th Grade to Catalina
This month, our 6th graders lucked out with some amazing weather during their Spring field trip to Catalina Island. Along with middle school science teacher Meredith Thomas and other skilled outdoor educators from Naturalists at Large, students spent several days at the Emerald Bay campground exploring Catalina’s unique environment, both on and off land.

Alumni Visit
Presentation to Students on AI
This month we had the pleasure of hosting alumni Peter Hu ‘18 and Lewis Lu ‘19 during their stay in Ojai. Peter is currently studying medicine and working in an orthopedic clinic in Orange County, while Lewis is pursuing his Masters in Finance at the London School of Economics. They enjoyed lodging at their old residence and revisiting fond memories of Besant House. Their week-long visit also attracted visits from former classmates and friends while they enjoyed visiting campus and other favorite haunts in Ojai.

From the Oak Grove Kitchen
Focaccia

This hearty focaccia recipe was included in a recent school lunch. Download the recipe card to add to your household's repertoire.

From Chef Julia San Batolome —
Recently in the Oak Grove kitchen, we have changed our pizza menu day to feature a “slab”-style pizza where we make the focaccia recipe and slice it horizontally, then build the traditional pizza (or tomato pie) on top. It is absolutely a hit and continues to be a favorite of our students to eat and of mine to make – so maybe bread is my thing now.

K Quote
“It is a very serious undertaking, to try to discover what is true, why we are here, and where we are going. This discovery cannot be made by the superficial solution of our immediate problems. The mind-heart must free itself from those dogmas, beliefs, and ideals of which most of us are unconscious. We are here to discover intelligently what is true; and if you understand this, you will discern something which is real, not something which is self-imposed or invented by another. Please believe that I am really not concerned with particular views, but with individual understanding, happiness, and fulfillment."
