A Message from
The Head of School
The culmination of the school year is fast approaching, which signals transition to many things – the completion of a grade, the advancement from one program to the next, the excitement of an Ojai summer, travel adventures, and leisure time with friends and family. For our seniors and families leaving Oak Grove, this transition is particularly poignant for them and for us here at the school.
Saying goodbye in any circumstance can sharpen our focus on the positive as we anticipate the impending loss – an opportunity to celebrate what was (ahh, the reminiscing). Endings can be heartbreaking, relieving, scary, and transformative and, if done while fully present, a magnificent mixture of all of these things.
One of the many things I love about working for a school is the cyclical nature where there are beginnings, endings, and space in between to restore, retool, prepare, before we start anew.
As we set the final touches for the celebrations and as soundchecks begin, take a moment to breathe in deeply all that we have shared here together, the beauty and the challenges, as we allow the letting go.

High School
Spring Showcase
Our High School Spring Showcase holds a special and significant place in the heart of our community. Starting at the art studio, families, staff, and students explored recent work in painting, photography, ceramics, and woodwork. It’s a chance to connect with each other, celebrate student creativity together, and remark on a year that always seems to have flown by.

“Mark’s service to the KFA, to the Teachings of our founder, to their dissemination, and to the school, are deeply woven into the fabric of this place, and will continue to live here even when those that walk on this campus no longer remember his name.”

On a bright and temperate spring Saturday in May, friends, community members, and loved ones gathered at Oak Grove School to celebrate the life of R.E. Mark Lee. At the Pavilion, a signature building whose construction Mark helped make possible, speakers shared remembrances of Mark as man and colleague. Paying tribute that day were Oak Grove Head of School Jodi Grass, KFA Executive Director Jaap Slujter, Mark’s daughter Nandini Lee Rao, as well as other dear friends and family.

An Engelmann oak has been planted in honor of Mark Lee just to the south of the Head of School’s office.

5th Grade in Joshua Tree
Outdoor Education
This May, Oak Grove’s 5th grade class ventured out on a four-day/three-night excursion to one of the country’s most widely recognized national parks, Joshua Tree. Home to spectacular metamorphic rock formations sculpted by wind and rain, an array of rich, diverse wildlife, and those famous other-worldly Seuss-like trees, it’s no surprise that this iconic southwestern destination attracts over three million visitors per year.

Career Night
Every day, our students grow toward a better understanding of themselves and who they wish to become by learning from each other and their teachers. Here at Oak Grove, community members also play a pivotal role as mentors and role models in our students’ educational foundation.

This year’s group of experts included a hairstylist, fashion designer, actor, business executive, attorney, medical professional, entrepreneur, and many more.

From the Oak Grove Kitchen
Pancakes
Flipping four hundred pancakes is no easy task. The day is an intricate balance of scaling and mixing batches and keeping the griddle at the perfect temperature, while scooping out lumpy batter and gently turning each one. As the stacks of perfectly steaming cakes begin to pile up, we carefully keep them warm until lunch time. My chef coat slowly turns from a fresh-pressed jacket into a Jackson Pollock-inspired piece of art. As I glance up from the chaos, I see students swoon as they peek in the window when passing by the kitchen. I just keep flipping.

This month the kitchen is featuring scratch-made pancakes. They are fluffy, flavorful, and very filling. Serve with fresh fruit or a cooked down fruit compote, whipped butter and of course a healthy drip of maple syrup.

K Quote

“Everything needs space to live, to play and to chant. That which is sacred cannot love without space. You have no space when you hold, when there is sorrow, when you become the centre of the universe. The space that you occupy is the space that thought has built around you and that is misery and confusion. The space that thought measures is the division between you and me, we and they. This division is endless pain. There’s that solitary tree in a wide, green, open field."
