A Message from

The Head of School

As I said at our high school graduation a couple of weeks ago, in the last week of school I had an opportunity to sit with the seniors as they shared their honest feedback about Oak Grove with me. We call this the senior exit interview. This is an opportunity for the students to express their thoughts, no holds barred. After graduation, I related this feedback with the staff and faculty to inspire thoughts on the future and inform changes to our program.

We had the exit interview on the Main House patio. It was an overcast morning as our seniors sat in silence to write their feedback on Post-It notes. Quietly students moved around the patio, affixing their feedback onto posters. The posters read:

"What should never change at Oak Grove?"
"What are Oak Grove’s areas of growth (or improvement)? "
"What advice do you have for future students?"

Once the students left, I was able to go around the patio to look at the feedback they had left. The feedback on growth areas included many suggestions. A few that seemed particularly poignant included:

“More interaction with the younger grades.”
“Headphone policy should go away.”
“Too many useless rules.”

I was particularly interested in their answers to “What should never change.” This one tends to be fairly consistent from year to year. Their responses included:

“Nature and wilderness-focused trips.”
“Lizard Talks.”
“Kindness.”

The final poster, which contained the seniors’ “Advice to future students,” really struck me. First, this poster had the most Post-Its. I was impressed by how much they contributed to this question. Although there were many ideas in many different words, most of them echoed similar sentiments. Several referred to a theme around nature, including enjoying the natural campus, appreciating the camping trips, and spending time in the Lost Meadow or Oak Grove.

One read, “Sit outside more.” Another theme was about sticking with it when something is difficult or trusting that everything will be okay. One such sentiment read, “Embrace the hard parts.”

The one that warmed my heart and was repeated over and over in different ways was, “Know that Oak Grove has your back.”

If I could leave this class, and all the students and parents who will not be returning to Oak Grove in the fall, with a bit of advice, it would be to echo our seniors' own sage wisdom. Yes. Embrace the hard parts. Do sit outside more. And, most importantly, know that Oak Grove has your back.

The Intention Behind

Capstone Projects

Presenting our students with purposeful projects that deepen self-knowledge and foster a sense of curiosity, as well as independent problem-solving skills, forms an integral part of our curriculum at Oak Grove School. In this vein, our 8th and 12th grade students embark on capstone projects each year that lead them away from the classroom, outside of their comfort zone, and into the world beyond.

K Quote

“Experience is the memory of experiencing, is it not? When experiencing ends there is experience, the result. While experiencing, there is no experience; experience is but the memory of having experienced. As the state of experiencing fades, experience begins. Experience is ever hindering experiencing, living. Results, experiences, come to an end; but experiencing is inexhaustible. "
