A Message from
The Head of School
The poster displayed at the front of the room read,
“A curious, open-minded thinker: approaching multiple points of view with curiosity. An empathetic, articulate communicator: uses non-verbal communication to show attention and respect while listening. A socially responsible and engaged citizen: awareness of conditioning, bias, and sensitivity.”
This list was a small faculty group’s response to the question, What aspect of the "arts" or student competencies from the Graduate Profile might we draw on to create both a brave and safe space for the expression of multiple points of view during this election cycle, without causing injury to others?
This was a meeting titled, “Preparing for a Presidential Election.” In addition to teachers receiving age- and stage-appropriate election learning resources from our Dean of Studies, Will Hornblower, we broke into discussion groups, each with a unique question. Some of the other questions included: Given the current political climate of polarization and the upcoming election, how do we as educators consider how this may affect our school community? How can we encourage civic engagement without alienating particular opinions or persuasions? How might we respond to parents or colleagues (other adults) who bring contentious political conversations to the school? What should we, “The School,” put in place for the day after the election, November 7?
This was one of the many meeting topics we explored together as a whole staff and in break-out meetings this past week as we prepared in practical and intellectual ways for the return of our students. Collectively, we had dozens of meetings throughout the week. We looked at our school culture, reviewed the science around child development, and discussed our takeaways from Lisa Damour’s new book The Emotional Lives of Teenagers, and/or Adam Grant's book Hidden Potential. We examined how we communicate with and what we expect from our parenting partners, and inquired into this year’s school theme – “A Light to Oneself, A Light to the World.” Regardless of the individual jobs we hold here at Oak Grove (classroom, kitchen, front office, maintenance), we are each a student and a teacher. We are all responsible for each of our students.

Jodi addresses supporting children's perceptions and concerns around adult reactions to the approaching presidential election.
As we return to school this fall, our students, even the smallest of them, may arrive to us with questions about conversations or news reports they are overhearing about the upcoming presidential election. No matter the political perspectives of the adults surrounding the child, the soundbites are often emotionally elevated ...

Summer Retreat

What comes to mind when you think of the word “retreat"? Is it a silent hall of focused meditators, a circle of yoga practitioners in a tropical paradise, or perhaps a relaxed face – eyes closed behind cucumber slices?
