A Message from

The Head of School

In human development, the age of 49 is considered middle adulthood. For adults with healthy development, middle adulthood is typically characterized by a deeper understanding of oneself, financial security (expansion of one’s economic safety net), intellectual autonomy, and a greater sense of competence.

As of this year, Oak Grove is 49 years old and is showing all the signs of a healthy middle adulthood.

Our student and employee retention is strong (nationally higher than most independent schools). As of this year, our faculty salaries are in line with the high-middle end of the scale compared to teachers at both Independent and public schools. Increasing salaries and benefits are particularly critical, given the cost of living increases over the past few years and the intensifying nationwide teacher shortage ...

Our Annual Theme

"A Light to Oneself, a Light to the World"

Each year, Oak Grove selects an annual theme based on the teachings of our founder, J. Krishnamurti, as a provocation for classroom inquiry, professional development for staff, weekly K Discussions, and as inspiration for events like the Annual Fundraising Tea. Our theme for the 2024-25 school year is “A Light to Oneself, A Light to the World.”

“One must be free to be completely a light to oneself. You understand? A light to oneself. And this light cannot be given by another, nor can you light it at the candle of another. If you light it at the candle of another it is just a candle, it can be blown out. But whereas if we could find out what it means to be a light to oneself then that very investigation of it is partly meditation.”

Child Development Snapshots

Age & Stage

Children go through certain predictable stages of growth, and each stage builds on the success of the previous stage (we walk before running, trust before independence). Each child has their own unique timetable for development, yet there are useful broad benchmarks.

Parent Perspective

Why I Give

Two years ago, I made an investment in my children’s future. I followed my intuition and moved my family to Ojai so my two school-aged sons could go to Oak Grove. I knew they needed the kind of support in growing into themselves that only Oak Grove could give.

Every day, as I watch my children thrive, I am reminded of why I made this choice. Oak Grove isn’t just a school; it’s a nurturing environment and community where every child is encouraged to explore their potential. The wonder in my boys’ eyes, the curiosity in their questions, and the confidence in their actions reaffirm my decision daily ...

All School Activity

Peace is of the Heart

We acknowledge Peace Day with a week-long exploration into the notion of peace. This week throughout campus, we will be celebrating through classroom curriculum, via the construction of a collaborative art installation titled “Sharing the Light Within,” culminating in an all-school assembly on Friday.

Teacher-Parent Communications

Letters of Intent

Letters of intent are communications that teachers write to families at the beginning of the school year which share their beliefs about children’s competence, identify key concepts that children will be learning, and reflect on the local and global community.

K Quote

“What is fear? One is afraid of the past, of the present, or of something that might happen tomorrow. Fear involves time. One is afraid of death; that is in the future. Or one is afraid of something that has happened. Or one is afraid of the pain one has had when one was ill. Fear implies time: one is afraid of something – of some pain that one has had and which might happen again."
