High School Spring Showcase 2026

Krishnamurti believed that true education is not merely about accumulating knowledge or achieving specific outcomes; rather, it is about understanding oneself and one’s relationship to the world. In the context of creative high school electives, this means that the goal is not to create the perfect ceramic piece, art portfolio, or to deliver a flawless performance on stage. Instead, it emphasizes self-discovery through a semester spent learning alongside teachers and peers. Each collection of ceramics, paintings, songs, poems (not to mention a few tasty morsels from the cooking elective!) reflects the individual expression of our students.

With that intention in mind, one might find it ironic to emphasize public showcases and performances, which undoubtedly come with praise and judgment both from the audience, and the artists themselves. At Oak Grove, however, the work is presented to an audience that has a genuine relationship with the artists, fellow students, and teachers. We love celebrating our students’ work as one big family.

Showcases also provide an opportunity to engage in language that goes beyond the usual complimentary jargon. Phrases like “beautiful work” or “you’re so talented” can be replaced with questions that explore the artists’ intentions. For instance, asking, “Was there a feeling you wanted to convey in this painting?” or “How did it feel when you saw your piece come out of the kiln?” can potentially open up a deeper dialogue. Does clapping in rhythm during a song help us connect more intimately with the music and the student musicians? When a poet bares their soul, do they feel seen and  heard when an audience member shouts, “Go in, Poet!”?

After visiting the art studio, outdoor ceramics, and cooking displays, high school musicians brought a vibrant presence and a variety of genres to the stage. Between songs, students shared their heartfelt poetry, complemented by a variety of dance performances featuring acrobatic moves, strength, grace, and quick costume changes. The joy and enthusiasm displayed by our high school students during these showcases, along with the supportive embrace from family, teachers, and peers, make High School Showcase a cherished event.

As always, it was wonderful to see so many alumni, including recent graduates returning home from their first year in college, come back to campus and share this special moment with us.
