From the Head of School

Unskillfully kicking a pass to a student during last week’s Field Day, I suddenly realized we are in full-tilt culmination mode. Soon, the school year will come to a close, and for some students and families, so will their time at Oak Grove.

At this time of year, we have the opportunity to celebrate the culmination of semester-long, or even year-long, projects. In early May, we enjoyed the refined English accents and bellowed harmonies of over 40 student actors on the big-screen play performance of Matilda.

Last Thursday, the 8th graders hosted a walk-through expo of their Into the Wild projects. The purpose of these projects is to connect a personal interest to a set of integrated learning objectives, including effective written and spoken communication, research-based analysis, as well as integrative and critical thinking. The project is self-directed and is developed over seven months, which culminates in the exhibition. The projects included a documentary film on local land conservation, a YouTube cooking show directed by and “starred in,” an en pointe choreographic story of Don Quixote (with handmade costuming), as well as a historical look at the origins of surfing, which resulted in the custom design and shaping of a surfboard.

On Friday, the spring edition of the Oak Grove Inquirer student newspaper went off to the printer, as we sat on the lawn of the high school enjoying immensely talented music students performing a live concert with more than a dozen cover songs, including Bob Marley’s Is This Love and MGMT’s Me and Michael. The HS hallways were transformed into an art gallery with large displays of jaw-dropping studio art works and intricately designed digital art. Bookending the musical performances, the dance team performed student-choreographed works of modern pieces. Our creative writing class pushed the Lizard's Digest website live, featuring intensely poignant short stories and eloquently phrased poetry including, “. . .weightless words leave their lips.”

In the next couple of weeks, I have the personal honor of joining the 8th grade on their Rite of Passage backpacking trip at Pine Mountain. I also look forward to watching the HS senior Gateways, in which each will deliver a TED-like presentation sharing their senior capstone Pathless Project, while reflecting on questions like "How did my Oak Grove education encourage me to challenge my assumptions and/or take risks?"

During our last week of school, the 6th grade will sponsor an open-air art show and poetry reading; kindergarten students will pass through a flower archway to symbolize the passage to elementary school; fifth graders will be gifted a ceremonial daily planner to symbolize their transition from elementary to middle school; seniors will enjoy a final dinner at Pine Cottage, Krishnamurti's home; and each of our 8th grade and 12th grade students will be the keynote speaker at their graduation ceremony.

The Class of 2021 Visit Hawaii

For the first time in 34 years, the Oak Grove Seniors could not travel to India for their capstone trip. With the help of Rabindra Singh and Frode Steen, Oak Grove formed a new trip to Hawaii. Enjoy this pictorial view of the students' adventure.

Understanding Krishnamurti

An Inquiry into the Nature of Thought

JULY 12-21, 2021

Krishnamurti’s teachings are extremely comprehensive, and they challenge us to examine the whole of life. In a somewhat similar manner, can we examine the teachings themselves as a whole, as a totality? We will explore this question by looking at five “dimensions” of the man and his message: the psychological teachings, the religious teachings, the nature teachings, the personal dimension, and the public dimension.
