From the Head of School
The original “Intent of Oak Grove School” was written by J. Krishnamurti in 1975 when the school was founded. One particular line reads, “Surely a school is a place where one learns about the totality, the wholeness of life.”
|
This totality includes the emotional, intellectual, social, psychological, spiritual, and physical realms of humanness. As our ever-exploring attention to what it looks like to educate “the whole child” continues, in 2018, Oak Grove established a Sexual Health and Wellness Committee. This group consists of administrators and teachers who represent various levels of child development throughout the school. Our goal has been to establish an evidence-based sexual health and wellness scope and sequence throughout the curriculum.

Sexuality, in and of itself, intersects and overlaps with every aspect of healthy development. Therefore, a comprehensive sexual health education must include the biological, socio-cultural, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of sexuality from the cognitive domain (information); the affective domain (feelings, values, and attitudes); and the behavioral domain (communication, decision-making).

Recently, with the engagement of the entire staff and faculty, we finalized a Sexual Health and Wellness statement, which reads:

At Oak Grove School we recognize that sexual health education begins at birth, and that our students' physical, social, and emotional well-being is critical to lifelong healthy relationships with themselves and others. This is reflected through many aspects of the learning day, from preschool to high school. A comprehensive and integrated sexual health curriculum includes developmentally and age-appropriate, medically accurate information on a broad set of topics related to sexuality.

Because this initiative, like everything we do, requires deep partnership between the parents and the faculty, we recently hired Deborah Roffman to assist us in synthesizing this work within the community. She will work directly with our faculty and parents over the next 18 months as we begin to implement this more integrated curriculum throughout the school. Ms. Roffman, named one of Time Magazine’s “Top Sixteen Parenting Experts for the 21st Century,” is the author of Talk to Me First: Everything You Need to Know to Become Your Kids’ “Go-To” Person about Sex.

Ojai's local paper, the Ojai Valley News, published an article about our current art installation titled "Our Pandemic Story." We are all aware of how art can be cathartic or a spring for change; in this community-wide art project, art and healing are combined to create some surprising results.

Day of Reading
|
This Friday is Oak Grove School's annual celebration of reading and love of books. In this video, students from preschool through high school are interviewed about their relationship to books and their reading choices. Enjoy!

"Matilda, the Musical"
With Covid mitigation still in full force, we got creative and filmed the cast performing their roles in "Matilda." The 3-camera shoot went to post-production for editing and our production of Matilda will be screened in person on one of our athletic fields.

This is also the title of a book that was published 50 years ago, and the topics it touches upon are as striking now as they were then.
