From the Head of School

With so many complex problems in our world, so much suffering, so much need, why would you choose to give your money to a private school? Why give to a school which is located on an idyllic campus with nearly .75 acre per student, with a student-adult ratio of 4:1, where students spend their days immersed in joyful learning?

We ask you to support Oak Grove, because the world needs people who can solve complex problems, people with the ability to negotiate on a global level, often through conflicting cultural, social, and political ideologies. These problem-solvers must have the ability to synthesize discordant ideas, because the world’s interdependence is rapidly narrowing, and these are skills that cannot be performed by a computer.

Krishnamurti once said that “A school, through its students, should bring a blessing to the world.” This is a radical idea, and at its core, Oak Grove is a radical school. Aristotle talked about living a eudaimonic life, which is living a life of virtue and excellence, living your highest self. This might be similar to what Krishnamurti referred to as “flowering in goodness.” What is most significant about this concept isn’t the benefit to oneself, but how this is a benefit to others and therefore initiates an endless cycle of reciprocity.

Oak Grove is not merely focused on preparing our students for their own singular futures, but for the future we share with all the world’s inhabitants.

Today, please support the growth and strengthening of this small but radical school.

Exploring Agriculture

As part of the middle school STEAM curriculum, students explore organic agriculture via a service-learning partnership with Earthtrine Farms. In addition to promoting environmental stewardship, students learn the essentials of growing food — bio-dynamics (soil prep), planting, irrigation, weeding, and harvesting.

Below is a short video of the students in action.

SoundofMusic_Logo_Blue narrower
Each year, Oak Grove produces one all-school play where students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade participate. Auditions were just completed for this year's all-school theater production — The Sound of Music. Rehearsals are now underway in preparation for the March 18th opening show.

Some of the other productions the theater department has taken on are Matilda, A Peasant of El Salvador, and Fiddler on the Roof.

Below, students start their first day of rehearsal by reading through the script to get familiar with the storyline.

Volleyball

The girls' volleyball consists of a varsity team and a junior varsity team. As part of the Condor League, their competitors were Midland, Ojai Valley School, Besant Hill, and Anacapa. The season just concluded, and the teams played with gusto, giving it their all. Congratulations, Oak Grove Lizards!

“Breaking the Pattern of Egocentric Activity”
“Will I as a human being give up my egocentric activity completely? What will make me move away from that? What will make a human being move away from this destructive self-centred activity?”
