From the Head of School

Today, I had the opportunity to sit with our high school students to talk about gratitude. We discussed the science around how noticing, scribing, and expressing gratitude have a profound effect on our physical, emotional, and cognitive health. Gratitude can reduce chronic pain, strengthen resilience, improve social relationships, and increase our ability to retain and revisit positive memories. Also, it is impossible to simultaneously feel gratitude and negative emotions at the same time.

It is late in the day on the eve of the Thanksgiving week break from school. As the voices begin to move further away into the distance and soon completely fade, the campus appears quiet under the soft slanted afternoon light of autumn. I am profoundly grateful to spend my days here on this campus. It is an honor to serve this magical school.

With gratitude,
Jodi Grass

Open House & All-School Showcase

Last Saturday, we had our annual Open House and All-School Showcase. This outdoor event was attended by prospective families, currently enrolled families, and all staff and board members.

Open House is a festive event, where new families are given campus tours. High school students give live dance and music performances. In addition, each classroom is represented by a teacher highlighting recent student projects, emphasizing the benefits of in-depth project-based learning.

The Importance of Touch

From the 2020-21 Annual Report

Recently, an alum came to visit campus whom I hadn’t seen for a long while. My instinct was to open my arms and move toward her, but instead we both took a step back and awkwardly waved at each other. It was frustrating to not be able to wrap my arms around her. It is equally frustrating and awkward to meet someone for the first time and not shake their hand. It is heartbreaking to have an emotional exchange with someone who is in tears and not be able to put an arm around them. A foot-bump or prayer bow communicates warmth and connection, but they also lack something fundamental to human interaction.

Simple touch can signal safety, support a feeling of affection, and increase a sense of trust. A hug, pat on the shoulder, the holding of a hand can activate the vagus nerve, trigger the release of oxytocin, and calm the cardiovascular system.

Can One Live Totally Honestly?

December 13-17
Online In-Depth Program

“Honesty is a very complex affair. When one says to oneself that one must be honest, is that possible?” It is very important to find out what it means to be totally honest, because we are going to deal with insight and the immediacy of action. It is utterly important, if we would grasp the depth of meaning of insight, to have the quality of complete integrity, to have that integrity which is the honesty of the whole.”
