From the Head of School
The Art of Relationship is a growing science – studied in the disciplines of business, mental health and physical health, as well as education.
Building rapport with each student is a foundational skill in teaching. Meta studies around academic performance reveal that when students have a sense of belonging (being in relationship), they exhibit a deeper level of learning, have better math scores, and higher attendance. The simple act of greeting students by name at the classroom door increases academic engagement by 20%.
This sense of belonging also has profound implications for student mental health, social development, and emotional well-being.

Pastoral Care Time
This past fall, we implemented Pastoral Care Time (PCT), which takes place during the first 15 minutes of each school day. Preschool through 8th grade homeroom and advisory teachers lead this time with their students. In the high school, all four grades participate in PCT as a morning meeting together. Parents are invited to join an adult PCT held at the Gazebo on Wednesday mornings.
The intention of Pastoral Care Time is to honor the start of a new day, to mark the transition from home to school. This is an opportunity to root or ground in the present moment; to slow down and connect with our current state, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually; an opportunity to be in touch with what’s happening for each of us as we begin the day, and to more fully engage in the rest of what the day may bring.

K Quote

We rarely listen to anybody. We are so full of our conclusions, experiences, problems and judgments that we have no space in which to listen. To listen is possible only when you put aside your opinion, knowledge, problems and conclusions. Then you are free to listen without interpreting, judging or evaluating. The art of listening is to listen with great care, attention and affection. If you are capable of such listening, communication becomes very simple and there will be no misunderstanding.
