Trust in Human Consciousness

Is Oak Grove a bubble, removed from the “real world”?

It’s an important question, and one worth looking at carefully.

Children are not small adults. Human development (cognitive, physical, neurological, social-emotional) unfolds over a long and intricate arc, often extending well into adulthood. To expect children to hold adult decisions or perspectives, or to navigate complex social and moral questions without support, is to misunderstand the nature of human development.

In the early years, especially, children are wired to understand the world through the lens of safety and relationship. Their primary question is not abstract or global, but immediate: Am I safe? Am I seen? Do I belong? From this foundation, everything else grows.

A Message from Oak Grove School Board Member,

As Our Circle Grows

As Oak Grove’s 50th school year draws to a close, our attention shifts from reflecting on the past to turning toward what lies ahead. What will it take to sustain this vital mission, to care for this land and these simple buildings, and to ensure that our school continues to thrive for generations to come?

For more than twenty years, the level of giving to be included in the Extraordinary Life Circle of Friends has remained unchanged at a minimum of $1,000 per year for five years. Over that time, both our school and the world around it have evolved. Earlier this year, we shared that this level has been thoughtfully updated to $2,500 per year, committed for five years, reflecting what it takes to sustain Oak Grove today.

East-West Psychology

At Taft Gardens

In our most recent High School field trip, students and teachers had the unique privilege of immersing themselves in the rich natural environment of Ojai’s hidden gem, Taft Gardens.

During our time in this iconic preserve, we studied the core tenets of Ecopsychology, a field that examines the intersection of the human mind and the natural world and the understanding that we are not separate from nature; we are a part of it. This concept naturally paved the way for us to explore ancient Eastern philosophical ideas, such as interconnectedness, beauty, harmony, and order.

Faculty & Staff Inquiry

Difficult Conversations

Our staff meets together monthly in a workshop series called “The Oak Grove Approach” to explore topics that lie at the heart of an Oak Grove education.

This month we reflected on “How to Initiate Difficult Conversations,” on creating psychological safety when we encounter differences. We were invited to think about ways in which difficult conversations are opportunities for reparative growth experiences, which, rather than alienating us from each other, can lead to greater intimacy.
The Art of Living and Learning

Revisiting our Theme for the Year

Earlier this month, we celebrated Theme Week - an opportunity to further explore our theme for the 2025/26 school year, The Art of Living and Learning. Through classroom discussion, staff inquiry groups, an all-school assembly, and dialogue, we explored how the art of learning and the art of living come alive at our school.
