From the Head of School

At what age should children have a Smartphone? Should an 11-year-old watch PG-13 movies? When is a good time to introduce video games (my child is begging to play!)? How much time in front of a screen is too much?

Navigating the influence of digital media on our children can be confusing and frustrating – particularly without good guidance or support. These technologies are a brand new development in human history, and therefore we are just beginning to witness their impact on people.

Smartphones, video games, television, and social media are a part of our daily lives and our children's lives. Even if kids are not personally connecting to technology, they are keenly watching us. Recently, while enjoying brunch with my adult children, I noticed a 7-month-old-ish baby holding her flat hand on her ear and babbling as her eyes fixated on her mom talking on the phone at the table.

Celebration

High school students celebrate the colorful festival of Holi. Typically, the celebration begins with one of the students from India explaining the tradition and meaning of Holi. Once the bags of colored powder are disseminated, the fun begins with chasing and spreading of color on each other. It's an annual favorite at Oak Grove.

Pneuma Breathwork

Sixth grade students had the opportunity to experience a powerful mindfulness technique. The sustained practice of breathing with intention combined with a specific musical sequence opens space for introspection and relaxation.

Students shared about rides on elephants, birds, dragons, magic carpets, underwater experiences, colorful visions, and lots of flying. The goal was to acquaint them with the subtle inner universe.

Shrek

After months of rehearsal and countless hours put in by the Oak Grove Theater Team, student performers and crew members, as well as inexhaustible parent and caregiver volunteers, the curtain was finally raised on four delightful performances of Shrek the Musical.
