From the Head of School

As the year came to a close, we had several opportunities to be fully present with our students for their many culminating events and celebrations – the 8th Grade Rite of Passage and Graduation from Middle School, Preschool and Kindergarten Transition Ceremonies, 6th Grade Poetry Reading, 5th Grade Passage Ceremony, End-of-Year Assembly, and the 12th Grade’s Expeditions, Senior Dinner, and Graduation.

Having the honor of listening directly to our seniors on several occasions over the final weeks of school, I was at times overwhelmed with the feeling of not wanting to let them go… particularly the three who have only been with us for such a short time. It just felt too soon. But we cannot stop time.

Anyone who has watched a child grow knows how fast it goes. Too fast, in my opinion. Sometimes, at moments of letting them go, we parents and caregivers might look back and feel disappointed that we actually wished some of that time away – rocking a colicky infant, holding space for a tantrum, waiting to hear from a teenager who should have checked in hours ago.

We wish the time away because it is painful, uncomfortable, and sometimes monotonous, but in the process, we may become disconnected or numb to the small moments we now reminisce about. As eloquently expressed by Gretchen Rubin, writer on subjects of habits, happiness, and human nature, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

We can’t stop time, but we can mark it. Celebrations are a way to slow the moment, to bring ourselves completely to reflect on the passage of time. I encourage you to enjoy the speeches below, to fully listen to these incredible humans who have prepared to share with us a glimpse of their time here at Oak Grove.

They have profound and insightful things to say. We have deeply enjoyed watching them grow here at Oak Grove.

Early Childhood Passage Ceremonies

Preschool and Kindergarten had their end-of-year passage ceremonies to acknowledge the completion of the school year. Below are a handful of sweet moments from those events.

The Student Newspaper

Twice per year, the Oak Grove Inquirer is released, featuring articles, poetry, opinion, art, and puzzles from grades school-wide. This past year the newspaper editor was a high school student, Surya Pulipati, who intends to run for editor again next year.

Digital Media in High School

Digital Media class is an increasingly popular high school art elective. Students meet with their art teacher, Brian Thornhill, twice a week in the upstairs loft of the light-filled art studio. Thornhill offers students many ways to explore the power of image making, storytelling, and conveying messages through digital art, digital photography, and video.

Trustees Meeting

Thank you to our Oak Grove School Board members for taking the time to represent our school at the International Krishnamurti Trustees Meeting in Brockwood Park, England.

"Lucky"

Take a look at this featurette showcasing "Lucky," our resident hawk. Lucky is incredibly bold and fearless around humans, often catching and devouring prey just a few feet away from staff and students. Lucky's presence and behavior offer many learning opportunities as part of our emergent curriculum.

Enjoy this short story and a song performance by the preschoolers and seniors.

Summer Camps

Today, a group of eager students from Oak Grove and beyond arrived on campus, packed their gear into vans, and headed out on a road trip to the Eastern Sierras. They will spend the next five days adventuring in the Sierras.

This year, Oak Grove teacher Cassidy Linder organized an array of camps for students aged 5 to 18. Below are a few photos from the Pastry Party camp.

There are a limited number of camp openings remaining for those who live in the area.

Upcoming Events
& Programs

This program is a unique opportunity to come together in silence at the Krishnamurti Center in Ojai, CA. The intention of this weekend program is to be a retreat in the deepest sense. It is rare that we have the opportunity to share a space in silence together; to gather together with the intention of minimizing the external distractions of the world to come in touch with the quiet space of our being.
