The Head of School

Why do we hate or fear what we don’t understand? How is fear different from hate? Can there be hate without fear?

Just this week, neo-Nazis marched through Nashville in the light of day. A child was murdered as the result of a brutal anti-transgender act of violence that occurred while at school.
The etymology of the word “ignorance” is from the Latin word ignorantia for “not knowing.” Not knowing is the impetus of curiosity and at the very core of learning. Why do we choose hate over curiosity? Is it because curiosity requires vulnerability and sensitivity? To be sensitively aware of our ignorance, of our “not knowing,” is the sacred conviction of the teachings of our founder.

When we think of sensitive awareness, we often think of being in nature and noticing a flower or the sway of a tree. This place of total observation, inward and outward, is where we also find innovation, discovery, creativity, revelation. . . This is the very nexus of creativity. Individual works of art, music, and humor resonate with us because we recognize the truth within them.

This complete observation is without preconception, prejudice, or bias; it is the act of noticing something as a whole and without our perceptual limits. It is being able to witness something unfold, not rejecting what we see or reforming it to fit into our bank of knowledge.

Sensitive awareness is honoring what is beyond our fear, our understanding, our conditioning. This is intelligence.

This type of intelligence moves us to look beyond our political, religious, and philosophical views; and to look without prescribed solutions fed to us by platforms, opinions, egos, and self-interests. This type of seeing, which is grounded in sensitivity, is needed to solve complex problems that need thoughtful and unique solutions… solutions that will not lead to new problems.

If sensitive awareness is intelligence, then ignorance is a lack of sensitivity.

Krishnamurti said, “The very nature of intelligence is sensitivity, and this sensitivity is love. Without this intelligence, there can be no compassion. Compassion is not the doing of charitable acts or social reform; it is free from sentiment, romanticism, and emotional enthusiasm. It is as strong as death. It is like a great rock, immovable in the midst of confusion, misery, and anxiety. Without this compassion, no new culture or society can come into being.”

Student Giving & Fundraising

Day of Reading

February 16th was our annual Day of Reading — a student-led fundraiser and giving event when students come to school in their pajamas, along with a favorite stuffed toy and a treasured book or two. The day is spent exploring the magic of words and pictures.

This year the students chose the Ojai Valley Family Shelter as their charity recipient.

First Grade

Poetry Tea Party

Love was the focus of a special first grade Poetry Tea Party earlier this month. With a crowd full of supportive family and friends, the first grade class performed poems and shared their original work over a cup of warm tea.

Middle School

Wyoming Teton Trip

Those adults who chaperone the Teton Science Schools field trip are able to witness awe and wonder ignite in their students as they explore our natural world on cross country skis and snowshoes. All the activities Teton Science Schools plan for 7th and 8th grade students encourage them to work together and think critically about our human relationship with the natural world. In small day groups, students study specific areas of interest, such as wildlife tracks through different habitats. Seeing the wonder and excitement as they find a new set of tracks and converse together about what that means is exactly the kind of teamwork we work to foster in our classroom environment.
