How many years have you worked at Oak Grove?
Since 2016.
Why do you work at Oak Grove?
I work at Oak Grove for all that it is and for all that it is not. I feel fortunate to both work and have my son attend Oak Grove, as well as blending my family with the extended Oak Grove community. My educational philosophies and practices of both teaching and learning have been fostered and enlightened while at Oak Grove. The food rocks as well!
A quote that inspires your approach to your job.
“See a need, fill a need” and “Hmmmmm.”
Where is your special spot on campus?
I have so many special spots, but maybe the zip-line.
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee.
What makes an Oak Grove education unique?
Oak Grove has an intimate approach to both the climate and environmental education. Within a thoughtfully crafted curriculum, Oak Grove balances a diverse group of lead teachers with unique approaches and skills to enrich everyone’s learning. Opportunities are created for students, teachers, and parents to connect with self, others, and nature.
How do we prepare students for their life ahead?
I think we are preparing our students to think and feel for themselves. We create space and time for this to happen during these crucial formative years. As much as possible, we foster strong inter- and intra-personal connections and awareness so that, on their road ahead, they will have these tools to face life’s challenges, to work cooperatively and collaboratively. At Oak Grove, we’re all learning how to be more confident, mindful, and authentic in our thoughts and actions.
What outdoor experience has been most impactful for you?
Camping and rafting with Middle School students in Utah was pretty awesome. Camping with 3rd grade and Group C is always fun! In general, I love camping and hiking.
The best live music performance/concert you ever attended is …
Ben Harper, during his “Fight For Your Mind” concert in 1995.
Which teacher in your life affected you greatly? How?
So many great teachers and some not so great. Looking back, I think each one made a unique contribution to my learning and teaching in some way.
Name something that nobody knows about you.
I am kind of an introvert.
Person (dead or alive, famous or not) that you’d most like to share a meal with.
My wife Bailey and our son Hudson.
Name a place you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t yet.
Europe. Preferably where there is surf!
What is your most bizarre OGS experience?
Probably the Thomas Fire experience in 2017. On a positive note, just the rad nature of nature itself.
Share a hilarious OGS experience.
Ah, man! You had to be there!
Favorite Oak Grove expression?
“At Oak Grove, the plan is….”
Could this be a new one: “Go sagely, and rock on!”?
