“I could spend hours describing the skills and lessons I gained at Oak Grove, but two stand out: mindfulness and self-motivation. ”
As a class of 2012 graduate, I can say unequivocally that I use the skills I acquired here every day in my work and in my personal relationships. The school’s unique academic emphasis on deep inquiry, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, and self-actualization helped spur my passion for learning. Few K-12 students are ever exposed to the Socratic method of teaching that encourages open-ended questions and discussions that cultivate critical thinking skills in students. Oak Grove’s unique commitment to this pedagogical method creates unique and well-rounded graduates with strong logic and reasoning skills who grow into lifelong learners.
I could spend hours describing the skills and lessons I gained at Oak Grove, but two stand out: mindfulness and self-motivation.
Specifically, an Oak Grove education demonstrates that meaningful achievements begin within, not through competition or external validation, but by aligning students with their inner purpose, fostering self-awareness, and igniting genuine passion. Instead of teaching to a test and ignoring the individuality of its students, Oak Grove teaches us that the most meaningful achievements come from the heart and burgeon into remarkable ideas and actions.
I took these lessons with me to UC Davis, where I started college with a clear learning plan developed in my senior year at Oak Grove. Experiences like the India trip broadened my perspective, helping me adapt to new communities—a skill that was invaluable as I adjusted to living independently in a new city.
When I graduated from college, I carried the same lessons I first learned at Oak Grove with me to Washington, DC, where I managed communications and strategic policy efforts for a member of Congress. The critical thinking skills I developed at Oak Grove proved invaluable. Working in Congress requires solving complex problems and uncovering solutions that are rarely obvious or convenient. I often leaned into Krishnamurti’s spirit of inquiry, seeking innovative answers to seemingly intractable challenges. It’s for these reasons and many more that I am deeply grateful for the education I received here—it’s something I wouldn’t trade for the world.
I know that every student sitting here today is destined to accomplish their goals and illuminate this world with their unique, powerful, and imitable spirit. Oak Grove is more than a school—it’s a community that nurtures curiosity, resilience, and purpose. As alumni, we carry its values into the world, and it’s an honor to give back to the place that helped shape who I am today. Thank you for supporting this remarkable school and the generations of students it continues to inspire.
