HS Student CenterGaye Theresa Johnson is Associate Professor in the Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies, and Associate Director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. A historian of freedom struggles and cultural politics who is deeply invested in social justice movements, Johnson is an award-winning scholar and teacher with an international profile in studies of Black radicalism, Chicana/o cultural politics, and expressive culture.
Johnson is the author of Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity: Music, Race, and Spatial Entitlement (UC Press, 2013); Futures of Black Radicalism, co-edited with Alexander Lubin and published with Verso Press in 2017; and Rings of Dissent: Boxing and Performances of Rebellion, which is forthcoming with University of Illinois Press Fall 2025. She is also a contributor and co-PI with Ananya Roy, Leisy Abrego, Veronika Zablotsky, and Maite Zubuairre for a project forthcoming from Duke University Press July 2025, titled Beyond Sanctuary: The Humanism of a World in Motion.
Johnson is an advocate, facilitator, and healing justice trainer for grassroots organizations and foundations, primarily in movement base-building, reproductive justice, arts activism, and secondary school social justice teaching. She has led healing justice trainings with community based organizations, foundations, universities, and jails. The former Board President of the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) in Ventura, California, she is now a working board member of California Latinas for Reproductive Justice and an advisory board member for the Goldin Institute and the Rosenberg Fund for Children.
Her proudest achievement is being a mother to her 13-year-old daughter and a part of the circle of friends and family that constitute the core of her life.
