How many years have you worked at Oak Grove?

Since 2013.

Why do you work at Oak Grove?

I work at Oak Grove because I believe in its mission. I strongly believe that play is the work of young children and the learning that happens within that setting is powerful. I am grateful to be at a school where I can support the social-emotional growth of children due to our small teacher-to-student ratio. I can also say that I am here because of my co-workers, who create an atmosphere of kindness, support, and genuine commitment to the well-being and growth of children.

A quote that inspires your approach to your job.

“Love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like “struggle.” To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.” -Fred Rogers

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee.

How do we prepare students for their life ahead?

In Preschool, children begin the meaningful work of advocating for their own needs through daily interactions with peers and support from trusted adults. Children learn to see and often support the needs of their friends as well.

What outdoor experience has been most impactful for you?

I feel lucky to work in the natural surroundings that make up our beautiful campus. While we most often stay in our play yard, we also take advantage of the orchard, meadow, garden, and the many other play yards on campus. Taking children to pick their own fruit and sit under the tree to tell or listen to a story is always a treat.

Which teacher in your life affected you greatly? How?

Mrs. Higgens in 4th grade was a teacher who won my heart. She was playful and predictable, loving, and knew how to bring a class together. She helped me to find that I love historical fiction during our library visits, and I still love that genre today.

Name a place you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t yet.

Italy.
