“A light to oneself, a light to the world”

Our Theme for the 2024-25 School Year

Each year, Oak Grove selects an annual theme based on the teachings of our founder, J. Krishnamurti, as a provocation for classroom inquiry, professional development for staff, weekly K Discussions, and as inspiration for events like the Annual Fundraising Tea. Our theme for the 2024-25 school year is “A Light to Oneself, A Light to the World.”

“One must be free to be completely a light to oneself. You understand? A light to oneself. And this light cannot be given by another, nor can you light it at the candle of another. If you light it at the candle of another it is just a candle, it can be blown out. But whereas if we could find out what it means to be a light to oneself then that very investigation of it is partly meditation.”

— J. Krishnamurti
Saanen, Switzerland 1976

Theme Week

Each Spring, Theme Week is an opportunity for us, as a community, to circle back to the theme and to, perhaps, deepen our exploration into the intent of the school and the teachings of Krishnamurti.

It is from the small things of everyday life at Oak Grove, living with the people and the philosophy the school is so closely tied to. It can be how everyone is willing to listen to what you have to say and to live through the better and the worse of life with you; it can be feeling welcomed by everyone with open arms regardless of who you are and where you are from; it can also be a trip to India where you get to see the different lives people live in this world, just to name a few.

Solving problems is how children build competence Solving problems is how children build competence — both in the classroom and in life. The aim of a healthy life is not to eliminate hardship but to develop the skills and inner resources to meet it.

Each challenge becomes an opportunity to refine our problem-solving abilities and strengthen our coping mechanisms, so that when difficulties arise, we can continue forward without being paralyzed by struggle. By normalizing everyday problems, we help children see that challenges are not detours from life’s path — they are the very ground upon which the path is forged.

High School students created a set of community ag High School students created a set of community agreements after reflecting on the following questions:

1) What do I need from my peers and teachers to learn?
2) What will I contribute to the high school community?
3) What do I need from others to feel safe at school (emotionally, physically and mentally)?

Simplified into a word cloud helps visualize words/phrases that were shared more often while recognizing every voice as equally significant. Inquiring into and reflecting on these questions together is one step toward creating an atmosphere in the school where teachers are learners and students are seen and heard, as we begin a new school year together.
