“A light to oneself, a light to the world”

Our Theme for the 2024-25 School Year

Each year, Oak Grove selects an annual theme based on the teachings of our founder, J. Krishnamurti, as a provocation for classroom inquiry, professional development for staff, weekly K Discussions, and as inspiration for events like the Annual Fundraising Tea. Our theme for the 2024-25 school year is “A Light to Oneself, A Light to the World.”

“One must be free to be completely a light to oneself. You understand? A light to oneself. And this light cannot be given by another, nor can you light it at the candle of another. If you light it at the candle of another it is just a candle, it can be blown out. But whereas if we could find out what it means to be a light to oneself then that very investigation of it is partly meditation.”

— J. Krishnamurti
Saanen, Switzerland 1976

Theme Week

Each Spring, Theme Week is an opportunity for us, as a community, to circle back to the theme and to, perhaps, deepen our exploration into the intent of the school and the teachings of Krishnamurti.

Arts, Blog, News
While the high school senior class is visiting our sister schools in India each year, the High School at Oak Grove dedicates two weeks to our "Mini Projects." Teachers lead small groups of students through an in-depth learning experiment into a craft, skill, or concept that piques the curiosities of both teachers and students. Examples have included: screen printing, song writing, sewing, cooking, screenwriting, ornamental mending, and improv.

Podcast Interview with Jodi Grass

Blog, News, Parent Education, Parent Perspective
In Episode 23 “Education as a Vehicle for Social Change,” Founding Mothers Podcast host Emily Race and Head of School Jodi Grass discuss the freedom that Oak Grove’s teachers have to implement activities that foster personal and social growth, outdoor and travel experiences to prepare youth and parents for the transition to adulthood, how students can support their mental health, and the value of questioning one’s thoughts to develop compassion.

Duncan says that what he has learned as a parent is that the school’s environment and philosophy are very important, but it is also vital to have a community where that philosophy is supported outside of the classroom.

What if animals had jobs? 🐼👩‍⚕️🦊⚖ What if animals had jobs? 🐼👩‍⚕️🦊⚖️🐰👩‍🍳

Last week, our fourth grade students brought this imaginative question to life through research, writing, and creativity. Each student selected an animal and a profession, then crafted a detailed report and a diorama scene to illustrate their vision.

Among the inspired combinations: a paramedic panda, a bakery-owning bunny, a fox archaeologist, a panther in the courtroom, a monkey business owner, an artist dog, a wolf actor (in sheep’s clothing, of course), an elephant boutique owner, and a sea otter lifeguard.🐶👩‍🎨🐒👨🏽‍💼

Curiosity, humor, and thoughtful research made this project a true celebration of learning through imagination. 🐾✨
