Autumn Paints our Garden with Vibrant Hues
Dear Oak Grove Community,
As autumn paints our school garden with vibrant hues, we’re thrilled to share the heartfelt, organic magic unfolding in our outdoor gardens. The children’s creativity and connection to nature are blooming!
Our first and second graders are forming special bonds through the Adopt-a-Tree curriculum. First graders are connecting with trees in the Enchanted Forest, which is adjacent to the Main House, while second graders are nurturing trees in the Food Forest by the high school. Each child has introduced themselves to their tree, shared energy, and listened for its name – a beautiful exchange of trust and care. From helping harvest persimmons to tracking growth and seasonal changes, the classes are learning the rhythms of nature together.
The third grade has been hard at work restructuring the main garden, with bold visions for a new garden by the main field. These strong manifesters are turning dreams into reality, and we can’t wait to see their plans take root!
The first and second grade garden is a testament to the power of child-led learning. The students have moved logs to create pathways, crafted welcoming signs, and hauled soil to shape their space. Their recent request for terra-cotta pots, soil, and seeds sparks excitement for what’s to come. Watching their self-driven engagement is truly inspiring.
During Pastoral Care Time, our eighth graders have been processing seeds and herbs, diving into the full cycle of growth. They’ve also been cutting back Virginia creeper, transforming the clippings into crowns and wreaths. This grounding work nurtures both the garden and their spirits.
Fall has kept us busy! The third grade enjoyed delicious apple compote, while first and second graders pressed apple juice and started apple cider vinegar. Second graders crafted fire cider, and we’ve all enjoyed breathwork sessions at the Jellybean. Garlic planting, sweet potato slips sprouting in water, saffron plantings in the Food Forest, peppercorn harvesting, and insect investigations have filled our days with wonder.
Thank you for supporting our garden’s growth. It’s a joy to witness our students’ hands and hearts shaping this living space. Stay tuned for more seasonal updates!
With gratitude,
The School Garden Team
