La Spada Family

“We feel strongly that the world needs more places like this. Krishnamurti talked about education and “the flowering of goodness.” That is a perfect way of explaining what we see in the students all around this campus.”

My name is Shannon La Spada and my husband is John. Our daughter Gianna is a senior at Oak Grove and has been there since the beginning of 8th grade.

We came to Oak Grove School during the global pandemic. Classes at most schools had moved to online learning. The beautiful campus and expansive outdoor space allowed for a completely different experience. Even in the midst of it all, there was a sense of community and togetherness.

When we left the campus that first time, my husband and I both had tears in our eyes. There was such relief that Gianna could return to in-person learning and gratitude for all of the care that had been taken to make that possible. We knew that day that this would be a safe place for her to learn and to grow, and a special place for our entire family.

The Oak Grove campus is stunning. It sort of takes your breath away. The teachers and staff exude kindness and compassion. It’s a feeling more than anything. It’s beautiful, but so much more than that.

John and I attended events and graduation ceremonies at Oak Grove from the start. Each year since Gianna began there, we have known someone graduating and wanted to witness their rite of passage. They are an emotional and uplifting experience. The students’ speeches are thoughtful and deep, poetic and vulnerable. They bring tears to your eyes. Time and time again, you hear the students express their gratitude for having been given the opportunity to learn in such a loving and supportive environment. You hear of how they have felt nurtured and how they have been inspired. You get the feeling that these are the kids who can change the world… and will.

John and I have offered our support to Oak Grove School in any way we can these past four years. We feel strongly that the world needs more places like this. Krishnamurti talked about education and “the flowering of goodness.” That is a perfect way of explaining what we see in the students all around this campus.

Our family initially came to Oak Grove for our daughter, but we are all better for it. We will carry this place with us for the rest of our lives.

When one of my family members asked me to explain my quarantine experience in one word, I said “grateful.” I chose this word because quarantine has made me aware of how much I had taken for granted, such as a loving school community, relationships with people, physical touch, fresh produce, my family having stable jobs, nature, and oddly enough, toilet paper!

Oak Grove’s high school students are obsessing over homework, class participation, tests, and how these will affect student grades. Even during remote learning, where our circumstances are incredibly different, students’ mindsets have remained the same.
