Why We Rock
Why does Oak Grove have so many rocking chairs around campus?
The benefits of rocking chairs are not just for lulling infants to sleep or helping the elderly gently relax. All people benefit from rocking. Research shows that the rocking motion engages the parasympathetic nervous system and releases endorphins to self-regulate the brain state. Physiological benefits include improved concentration, enhanced ability to problem-solve, and enriched overall cognitive processing. Emotionally, rocking has a calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety. Some studies indicate an increase in creativity for children and adults while rocking.
So, next time you have a few minutes, have a sit in one of the many rocking chairs throughout campus.
